Surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 in grey waste water from residential areas, toilet waste from airplanes and waste water from Hong Kong International Airport

Staff involved: Luís Pedro Carmo, John Berezowski

Duration: Sept 2020 – ongoing

The VPHI is collaborating with researchers from the City University of Hong Kong to find innovative methods to effectively detect and surveil SARS-CoV-2 in Hong Kong SAR.

The main objective of this project is develop sampling and detection procedures for water sources (residential areas, toilet waste water from residential areas, airplanes and Hong Kong airport) to improve surveillance and early detection of local and imported cases to Hong Kong and assess the viability of this concept as a component of an early surveillance system for COVID-19.

This project will also enable the assessment of this innovative surveillance approach for endemic but also emerging diseases that could cause epidemics in the future.
