Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS)

Modelling the economic efficiency of using different strategies to control porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) at herd level

Christina Nathues

In a first step, a model will be created to calculate extra costs due to PRRS in an infected pig herd in comparison with a negative herd, for three representative European countries (Germany, the Netherlands, Spain). In a second step, the model will be used to compare different intervention strategies for the control of PRRS with regard to their economic efficiency. In the future, the model shall serve as a tool for veterinarians and farmers to support decision on the most efficient control strategy for the respective herd. The project is a collaboration with the Clinic for Swine, Vetsuisse Berne, and the group for Veterinary Epidemiology, Economics and Public Health, Royal Veterinary College (UK).
